Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to how Financial Aid works at HTU.

Your financial need is the difference between how much it costs to attend college, known as the Cost of Attendance (COA), and how much you and your family can contribute towards your education, referred to as the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Financial need is determined by analyzing your family’s financial information.

HT carefully examines your family’s financial resources to assess how much you can reasonably pay out of pocket and how much financial aid you may qualify for. This assessment includes the following factors:

  • Your parents’ taxable and untaxed income.
  • Family assets (such as savings, stock funds, real estate, etc.).
  • Any special circumstances (e.g., job loss, medical expenses).
  • The number of children in your family.
  • The number of children who are full-time undergraduates in college.
  • How close your parents are to retirement age.

Financial aid eligibility is determined by the following steps:

  • Cost of Attendance (COA): This includes tuition, housing, books, supplies, and other personal expenses.
  • Expected Family Contribution (EFC): Your family’s financial situation is analyzed to calculate how much you can contribute.
  • Eligibility for Financial Aid: The EFC is subtracted from the COA to determine your financial aid eligibility.

Financial aid can come from federal, state, university, and private sources. It may include gift aid (such as scholarships and grants) or student employment, which does not need to be repaid. Additionally, student or parent loans can be borrowed to cover educational expenses and must be repaid after graduation.

Need-based financial aid helps cover the gap between a school’s Cost of Attendance (COA) and what a student’s family can afford. It is determined based on financial information submitted in federal, state, or agency applications.

Non-need-based aid is awarded based on the school’s COA and is often determined by academic or athletic merit, leadership, or community service. This aid is not influenced by a family’s financial need.

Work-study provides part-time jobs to students with financial need, allowing them to earn money for educational expenses. Work-study jobs are typically related to a student’s field of study or involve community service. Students interested in work-study must indicate this on their FAFSA application.
